10 to 15 Volt Automotive Source.

Post by danlee58 »

I am using a SuperPro in an automotive application. I use an adjustable Buck/Boost pre-regulator to get 7.5 for the SuperPro. Is that preregulation necessary, or can I power it directly from a 10 to 15 Volt automotive source.

There are probably others here who can give you some ideas. Automotive environments can be pretty harsh, with power surges, the possibility of reverse polarity (think jumping a car with the leads reversed).

I have used the OKI-78SR to generate 5V (it can tolerate 36V and is reasonably efficient). In addition I would add a series diode, and a big Zener or transzorb to handle spikes, and a large cap with a higher voltage rating than 16V.
