I would like to have some program actions taken when the ARMite is connected to
a PC thru the USB/serial, but not when it is stand alone. Is there a simple way
to check in software for connection?

How about 10K resistor from Vusb (5V) to an input and another 10K to ground?
Vusb -----/\/\/\----IOpin-----/\/\/\----GND
It doesn't tell you if your PC is running or blue-screened out, or if your
application is running. But to check those, you would need to have some
heartbeat program running on the PC.
